I usually work in watercolor but once in a while I use acrylics and oil to get more dramatic effects. Over the past few weeks I tried mixing it up a little by combining different media together. I'm pleased with the way my experimental series is developing. I've been using watercolor to draw the main image. Next I use water washes with a broad brush or a spray bottle to encourage the watercolor to spread and diffuse the first image. I drop in multiple tones of the chosen color. Next I choose areas to add acrylic in the same or contrasting color. In one of my test paintings I kept it monochromatic. In another I added a wash of complementary color. When it had dried I would go back in with dark, intense watercolor to redefine some areas. Lastly I would add a silver charm to the image. The results were pleasing.
I'm planning on using this technique to create unique paintings of emblems which are symbolic to individuals. For example, I come from a small fishing town and my father was a fisherman. So the jumping herring with the silver boating charms represent my heritage. What emblem and in what colors would you enjoy being represented by this mixed media technique?
