I'm a Scot living and working in Florida, USA. I use a range of media to create artworks. My first piece of art was exhibited in the Mclaurin Gallery in Ayrshire, Scotland as a teen. My high school art teacher introduced me to watercolor paints and screen printing and I was up and running. Since then, I've added oil painting and clay sculpture into my work. My first framed painting was a rendering of my father's fishing boat coming to the pier in my hometown of Girvan, Scotland.
I paint what I like, what I miss or what's on my mind. I'm always drawn to things that remind me of home. Scottish landscapes provide a vehicle to take me home or connect with the people and things I miss as I've lived and worked far from home for much of my adult life. I use photographs of favorite places, people or objects as inspiration from a distance. I'm also inspired by the vulnerability and strength of the human form which features in my work. In the light and freedom of Florida I work in my studio - lovingly called the Arty Bar. My Weimaraner dog, Velvet, is often at my feet (or onthe sofa as she likes her comfort) in the studio.
I studied with Robert Leedy and Marissa Yow at the former Cultural Center in Ponte Vedra Beach. I've enjoyed private tuition with MaryO Smith, an award winning artist based in Georgia.
I am a member of both St. Augustine's Art Association. Jacksonville Coalition for the Visual Arts and Jacksonville's Watercolor Society. These local organizations are a great way to stay in tune with what's happening locally and to meet fellow artists. I also exhibit at The Art Center Jacksonville.
I volunteered at Gabriel House of Care providing art classes for organ transplant and cancer patients and their carers as part of an integrative and holistic healing program. I drew upon my own experience as a cancer survivor of making art as a healing process.
“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
